Inductively-coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry
Atomic Spectrometry Updates are annual reviews written by a community of experts in their field.
The aim is to provide six authoritative, critical and comprehensive reviews of the major fundamental and applied areas of analytical atomic spectrometry.
They currently appear in alternate issues of the Royal Society of Chemistry's Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry (JAAS). The 2012 programme is:
- Environmental analysis
- Clinical and biological materials, foods and beverages
- Advances in atomic spectrometry and related techniques
- Elemental speciation
- X-ray fluorescence spectrometry
- Industrial analysis: metals, chemicals and advanced materials

Allan Ure Bursary 2012
Applications are invited for the 2012 Allan Ure Bursary. The award is presented to a scientist, at the start of their career, who the adjudicators believe has made a significant contribution to knowledge in the area of the application of atomic spectrometry to environmental science. The successful applicant will receive £500 to help with any expenses that may be of benefit to their career.
Applications should be submitted by the 30th April 2012. Details of how to apply can be found here.
Latest Update
The April issue of Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry contains the latest Update on Clinical and biological materials, foods and beverages. A new writer, John Marshall, is welcomed to the team with primary responsibility for preparing the foods and beverages table. John is an experienced writer and has been involved with ASU in the past.
Please note that online access to the full Update is currently free upon registration with the RSC website.
Updated ASU Manual
Note to all ASU writers and referees: The updated version (1.1) of the ASU Manual is now available on the Members page. A copy of the revision form can also be downloaded from there.
New Photos
Photos of the 2011 Board Meeting and Dinner in Guildford and the 2010 event in Cambridge are now on the website.
2011 ASU Board Meeting
The Annual Board Meeting was held at the University of Surrey, Guildford, UK on the 14th July. There are now new pictures of the Executive Committee and the Editorial Board.
At the meeting, Dr Andrew Taylor, stood down as Chairman of ASU having completed his term of office. The new Chairman is Dr Hywel Evans, Associate Professor (Reader) in the School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Plymouth. Dr Simon Branch, who has been an ASU writer since 1990, retired from ASU following a change in career away from atomic spectrometry. More details
25 years of JAAS and Atomic Spectrometry Updates
In 2010, we celebrated 25 years of the Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry. The first Atomic Spectrometry Update, the successor to the separately published Annual Reports on Analytical Atomic Spectroscopy (ARAAS), appeared in the first issue of JAAS and has been a part of the journal ever since. Steve Hill, in an Editorial in the October 2010 issue, gives an account of the history of ASU and its association with JAAS. This article can be viewed here
In another more extensive article in the same issue, members of the Atomic Spectrometry Updates Editorial Board consider how the subject of atomic spectrometry has developed in the past 25 years.
